How Does Perforation Benefit Aerospace?

Heat

• Vehicles and satellites need insulation to control heat by thermal radiation, convection, and conduction. This insulation is full of air during ascent, but perforation allows air to gracefully exit the material and avoid damage.

• Perforated materials can be incorporated into thermal protection systems to manage heat transfer with various hole sizes, patterns, and open areas.

Pressure

• Perforation helps to equalize pressure during launch via airflow control.

Weight & Noise

• Perforations can reduce the overall weight of aircraft components without compromising structural integrity. Micro-perforations in aircraft cabin panels absorb sound waves, reducing noise levels for passengers.
